3 Reasons So Many People Gather at Crowded Shibuya Halloween

Following Christmas, Valentines Day,
Halloween is getting more and more popular event in Japan.

The most famous place for Halloween in Japan is Shibuya

below the pic, you can see how crowded shibuya is on Halloween

So many people gather on Shibuya for Halloween that some serious troubles occur such as molester.

Suddenly, I wondered

「Why that many people gather at  Shibuya for Halloween,
even tho it’s super crowded」

How come they wanna go to Shibuya Halloween which is more crowded than commuting trains that they really hate??

it doesn’t make sense.

I believe that everything has reasons for the way it is.

So, I thought the reason and came up with 3 reasons why people go to super crowded Shibuya Halloween

Jumping to the conclusion,
there are 3 reasons  as following

・Openness even for “non dating people”

・Unusual of “A nail that stands won’t be hammered down”

・Diffusing Capacity by “the digital native”

let me talk about these 3 reasons with more detail

Openness even for “non dating people”

Those events that came from America are Christmas and Valentines Day.
In Japan, all of the events are for “couples”.

However, Halloween is for not only couples, but also for not dating people

it opens for Eveyone

Also, you do not need to wear costume or cosplay to enjoy Halloween.

In addition, there is no fee to join Halloweens party.

Literally, everyone can enjoy the Halloween and thats why so many people gather at shibuya halloween.

Unusual of “A nail that stands won’t be hammered down”

As expressed by the famous Japanese saying “a nail that stands will be hammered down”, Japanese prioritize groups over individual.

Once I studied abroad and saw the Japanese objectively, the sense was really clear to be seen.

However,

on Halloween, the opposite happens.

that is, the more funny and unique costumes you wear and more you stand,  the more popular you will be.

On Halloween, A nail that stands won’t be hammered down”

This is unusua,l compared to school or company where  a nail that stands will be hammered down.

There is a famous theory about human needs, called “Maslow hierarchy of needs”

The theory argues that generally human has 5 category of needs like layer.  In order for motivation to occur at the next level, each level must be satisfied like pyramid.

According to the theory, the need of “esteem” is above the need of  loving/ belonging. This means once the need of “esteem” is satisfied, people is to satisfy the loving/ belonging.

Looking at Japanese society, as group is focused and prioritized, most of them belong to some community such as school.
this means they are satisfied with loving/belonging need.

Since the loving/belonging need is satisfied,  they seek for the next level motivation, which is “esteem”  but it is difficult to find opportunity to satisfy the need of esteem in daily life like Japan.

So, Halloween is used as an opportunity to satisfy the need of Esteem, because on Halloween, A nail that stands won’t be hammered down”

Discussing the reason for people to go to Shibuya Halloween with Maslow’s hierachy of the needs, going to halloween does make sense.

Diffusing Capacity by “the digital native”

Most of those attend the Halloween are teenagers like 10s or 20s.

And they are the generation that they use SNS as a part of life.

So, thanks to the digital native who post about the Halloween on SNS, the Halloween is getting more recognized and spread among their friends automatically, which results in the increease of the attendant.

Actually, there is a data that shows that the number of people who go to the Halloween begun to increase since 2010 when the iPhone started to be used among Japanese.

these are the 3 reasons that I came up with for why so many people gather Shibuya Halloween.

As Recap

・Openness even for “non dating people”

・Unusual of “A nail that stands won’t be hammered down”

・Diffusing Capacity by “the digital native”
